The October Chatham REA meeting was held on Monday, October 14, 2024, at the Rebecca Padgett Event Center with President Princetta Simmons presiding. Members were asked to wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Members celebrating birthdays in October were recognized by Birthday Chairpersons Beverly Copeland & Barbara Caughman. The Necrology Committee presented the list of deceased CREA members and district employees, and a moment of silence was observed.
Dr. Gwen Yarborough, GREA Area VI Director stressed the importance of promoting membership in the local unit and state association. The October featured speaker was Janet Hiller from the Make a Wish Foundation, an organization that helps fulfill the wishes of seriously ill children. Congratulations to Dr. Clifford King. He was presented with the Albert Nelson Maquis Lifetime Achievement Award on September 10, 2024, by Marquis Who’s Who. Proclamations for Georgia Retired Educators Day have been approved by: Chatham County Commission, Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education, Town of Thunderbolt, Garden City, Pooler, Tybee Island, Port Wentworth, Bloomingdale, and the City of Savanah. President Simmons will be presented with proclamations throughout the months of October and November 2024. Georgia Retired Educators Day will be observed on Sunday, November 3, 2024. CREA members will attend worship service at Overcoming by Faith Church, 9700 Middleground Road, in Savannah, at 9:00 am. CREA members volunteered at P.A.C.K. (People of Action Caring for Kids) on October 24, 2024, to help assemble food bags for children to take home over the weekend. It was an extremely rewarding experience. The next CREA meeting will be held on Monday, November 11, 2024, at the Rebecca Padgett Event Center. Registration begins at 10:30, and the meeting begins at 11:00 am. The 2024 Dewey Lee Scholarship will be presented. Members are asked to bring gift cards to support the holiday wish list for children and their families at Greenbriar, the Austin House, and Safe Shelter. |
